The magic behind the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony
March
2006 - Less
than three days after the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth
Games in Melbourne, the Melbourne Museum in Carlton Gardens
opened the doors on its Spirit of the Games exhibition, a wonderful
display highlighting so many of the artistic efforts that
contributed to the magic of the occasion. Who can forget the
flying tram that descended onto the grounds of the MCG from
the top of the stand. Or the creatures that floated above the
ground, suspended on wires. The glorious costumes, the spectacular
visual effects, the fireworks. HRH Prince Edward opened the
exhibition on the Saturday following the opening ceremony
and those of us who were among the first to tour through were
genuinely impressed, as was the prince. This great show will
be on display until July and is well worth a visit. There are
videos on the special effects and how they were put together,
how the leading roles were cast, how ideas were developed.
In fact, if you have a question on how things happened, there's
sure to be an answer here. You'll even see the special chair
Her Majesty The Queen herself sat in to view the spectacle.
Plenty for the curious and the kids will love the lot. My
photos just
give a tiny taste of what's on display. Go see for yourself.
Even that tram has flown in for the occasion!
